can you help me? I am contemplating relocating there.. so I am looking which geographiacal area should I concentrate on.. schools, jobs, alternative communities, arty people..

I need to be in a warmish climate, and dont like it if its windy all the time,- so some coastal areas might be out.. but otherwise its the cool people that are going to make me move there..

any suggestions where I can start reading up, asking around, post any listsings etc? thanks so much for any suggestions!

    Hi Jana

Congrats that your seriously considering moving to beautiful Aotearoa:)
I have done quite a bit of traveling in NZ over the past few years ..
and with your words in mine I would take a closer look at the Coromandel area (peninsula) on the North Island.
And even if you find it not to be your right match I have a feeling it would do as a great steppingstone.
    All the best.
    Mir.
    • MM, thats great encouragement.. In fact that is where I got stuck on my google search..
How long does it take to get there if you say fly into Auckland?
It does look super idyllic, but could I get work there?
and: how hot does it get in peak temps, and how humid? (i dont do too well with high humidity/temps)

I have a 20 year old daughter who most likely would be working/studying art.
Do you know anywhere she could go and study, do an internship etc?
(see her art in the link on my profile)

Thanks so much for your input, every little helps!
      • Hi Orange...Coromandel is only afew hours of Auckland..there is not alot of work..but like most you will find something to get by on..NZ is not so humid compared to Aust..temps will be around the 26-30 celcius mark..

There is an art school at Hungry Creek..Puhoi 45 mins drive north of Auckland..the area is prolific in artists especially up the Bay Of Islands way..which also is a beautiful area..

Also heading to the South Island to Nelson Golden Bay may also be worth checking out..alternative and arty and acessible..
  • Hi Jana,

I 'm not sure what you mean by windy, but NZ is located in what they call "the roaring forties." This refers to the latitude, and that places in this latitude tend to be windy.

NZ tends in general to be a windy country. It's not windy all the time, but there can be frequent strong winds, which I have experienced in many different parts of the country.

    Bruce :-)
    • Hi Bruce,
well I survived the typhoons in Japan ok, because I lived a little up country and inland..
So I guess I should just not be living on a really exposed edge of a coast.. thats all.

I had a better look at the geography and I was happy to see that much is inland, and in bays, rather than just a straight coastline. So thats what I meant..

Thank you so much for the feedback!

      Jana
