Where's the best weather? I define best as warm, relatively dry but not desert-like. I've heard the northeast coast fits the bill while the southwest is damp & chilly. Correct? Of the major cities does Aukland have the best climate.

Re: Best weather?
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 11:53 AMRemember the Crowded House song "Four Seasons in One Day" - that was written about Auckland weather...nuff said. Having lived all round New Zealand, I found Auckland only slightly less windy than Wellington and slightly more changeable. If you are wanting warm & relatively dry year round, New Zealand may not be the place for you as we have a reasonable amount of rain but Northland (north of Auckland) might be the closest thing to fit the bill. Some of the wine grape areas might be up your alley too, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Marlborough (some of which are south and west). Are you looking to visit or live here?

Sounds like San Francisco. "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco."
I'd love to live there but I don't qualify on points so it looks like I'll have to settle for tansient status. -

Re: Best weather?
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 3:34 PMHaving just moved to Christchurch from San Francisco, I can say, yes, NZ weather is more variable than SF weather! Wellington is known as the windy city, but it's downright windy here in Christchurch. Gotta know which way the wind blows too as you need to dress differently depending on whether its an Easterly, Southerly, or Nor'wester. Not sure what it's like in other parts of the country.
Cheers,

Re: Best weather?
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 4:20 PMI would venture to say best weather would be from Feb till May...more settled...just plain crazy right now tho...and besides this winter which was worst in 40 years, our winters are usually mild and quite nice...spose that depends on where you live but the weather here an hour up from Welly is so diff and we have good weather like Golden Bay does down the top of the south island... -
