When I was in Christchurch there were surfers at every beach, even on the grey wet days. Very hard core. All ages and all skill ranges. And this was in the throws of Autumn. I was told that in summer it completely booms there.

Highly recommend Raglan and the Raglan Surfing School http://www.raglansurfingschool.co.nz/ It's a really laid back town, but if you want to have your own place and be close to the water, these are good places to stay: http://www.sleepinglady.co.nz/ It's so quiet at night, you can hear the waves! Otherwise, if you are on a budget, you can stay at their lodge (see the Surf Adventure package).

Hi Dustin..I dont surf but know of those who do..seems areas like Raglan and Castlepoint are popular that I know of and Piha ..am sure theres heaps of others... As to sharks pfffttttt....Oz is where you need to worry...we dont have many attacks at all...

So the word on the streets is that the surf in NZ is amazing. A friend told me to pick up the "Drive Thru New Zealand" DVD, which I will, but the major issue addressed by this post is to see if there are many surfers in this group and if so, how is the surfing lifestyle in NZ? Are there any "surf communities" or "surf cities?" Also, what do you make of the statement that I often receive "Oh, theres a ton of sharks down there too man."
