Sheena, I lived in Wellington for 6 years. It's a lot like San Francisco - only nicer and more friendly. The weather is more harsh in Welly than SF, though.

I lived right on the Wellington Coast, and now Ilive not far form the ocean in SF...and you're so right, Shek....it's so much milder here. I actually find myselfmissing the gale force winds of Welly!

I have noticed that wherever I have been in the mainland (usa) it has never been as windy as it gets on Maui. I love the trade winds here. NZ entices me....I'd love to come for a visit.

I think you'll find Maui's winds a great deal tamer than the winds of Wellington. If you like the ocean, there's nothingmore dramatic than a walk along the Wellington coast on a windy day (which is almost always.) I left NZ in September and I miss it *a lot*. It's true what the song says, folks, you don't know how lucky you are.

An unusually super windy day.....nothing to do with a herricane....about a year ago i was walking in town. The dust felt like needles in my skin. I had to lean hard against the wind as i was walking. There was debri for sure. It even took the roof off one of my favotate places to have lunch. They remained closed for over a month for repairs.

I love blustery days. It usually depends where you are on maui if you are going to experienc winds like that.....it was very rare for that to occur in town.

I lived in Karori, just over the hil from Wellington, for a year in 2003 before moving to Auckland. LOVED "wet and windy" Wellington. Reminded me of San Francisco, where I grew up, only smaller, more laid back, and easy to get around. Worked in Auckland all 2004 and lived in Pukekohe about 30 km south. Auckland is Big City with all the good and bad that goes with it. Wish I were still in Wellington.

So the irony here is (living in Wellington, as I do), I went with a friend to go kite surfing last week..

..only to find that the wind had died completely, and we had to pack it in for the day.

                  nuts! :)
