Hi,
I'm new to this tribe... thanks for your great information.
I'm planning to move to NZ in the next 12 months, work permit permitting, of course.
My borfriend and I have 3 cats... so there is obviously a lot of anziety on my part over the transport of our pets.
I read eveything on the sites you have recommended. It scary...
One question I have is where to you get the proper boxes? At the airports?
I'm really nervous about having all the documentation ready. It's upsetting to think they might put them to sleep once we land.
I'm prepared to stay in Auckland as long as it takes for their quarantine.
Id like to get the boxes and have them in the apt. to give the cats time to get used to them and be comfortable inside. Otherwise they might claw their way out during the 12 hour flight. I'm also thinking they have to be sedated.
Poor babies. :(
Oh well, I can't think about leaving them here.
Thanks for any insight you may have regarding this....
cheers!

Re: Moving pets
Tue, September 26, 2006 - 4:09 PMI'm going through the same thing right now. Have you ever traveled with your cats before? I highly recommend a mild sedative, but not one that'll knock them out. You don't want to have to worry about whether or not they're still breathing. But a light sedative will keep them calm and less anxious. -

Re: Moving pets
Tue, September 26, 2006 - 4:46 PMmy poor cats have never been anywhere except the vet's office. I'm thinking of strting to drive them around often between now and then to get them used to moving around.
If I find out where to get these special pet carriers, I'll let you know. -

Re: Moving pets
Wed, September 27, 2006 - 10:19 AMI also found out that you have to use a pet relocation service. I called "Anilmals Away" and he told me that the shown and described containers on their website are allowed by NZ. They will call and talk to your vet, and take care of all resulations to help make sure you comply.
There are seveeral on the webiste www.yellowpages.co.nz and search under "pet transport"
Sounds like they take care of everything for you.
I'm off to buy containers!

Re: Moving pets
Wed, November 8, 2006 - 12:40 AMKitty sedatives are contraindicated for air travel. Just one of many sites I've seen stating this position:
www.avma.org/careforanim...s/sedate.asp
Also, anything you've ever heard about the noise deafening them is apparently outdated if it was ever true. All the people I've talked to say there are special sections of the cargo hold set up for live animal crates that are well insulated from noise and also protected from shifting heavy cargo loads. It is a routine procedure for countless excessively pampered show cats and dogs to fly in this fashion. A quiet dark space is thought to be more calming than the relatively chaotic environment in the cabin, theoretically there is more material between them and the solar radiation we're all subjected to at those altitudes, and they have more room in a cargo crate than they would have in a carry-on approved carrier. Good luck with the move! -

Re: Moving pets
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 5:53 PMLittlewing where are you living in the states right now....I hope you realise that the process is about 6 months long getting your pet up to the standards. If you are in Cali, I could help you with a pet relocator. I am not sure if you can put all the cats in one big box or if you have to do it all separately, but can purchace the boxes vertually anywhere like Petco etc. But that is the least of your worries......www.biosecurity.govt.nz/import...spe.htm
There is the list of what you have to do, and what forms to have, and what forms to fill out. Make sure you start this EARLY, or else you will end up leaving your pets behind in your rush to get here. (I did that and regret it). It also cost A LOT of money. It was going to be $1,500 for my dog. So you with 3 cats could be a lot lot more. There are 2 ways of doing this.....by yourself reading the forms from the link I just sent you, or get a pet transporter company to help you. They make sure everything happens right, which is important. These pet relocators also have a list of vets that they work with, but if you do this on your own make sure that you ask the vet if they have done pet export to New Zealand. Very important because New Zealand is the most strict country in the world. One other side note, wait for your pet to leave and dont leave your pet with friends that will take care of the rest because you cant rely on other people (Again something learned from experience).Let me know if I can help you further. -

Re: Moving pets
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 9:51 PMI live in San Francisco. Thanks for all the help. If everything works out, I won't be moving until possibley next summer... I'm working on a horticulture certificate and won't be finished until next June.
But, yeah, I think a pet relocator would be best.
I'lll take any advise you can give... the cats have to be seperate, I read that. I think it's best anyway.
Thanks again!

Re: Moving pets
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 11:29 AMI found a New Zealand site that talks about pet travelling. And once you get there and need a pet sitter or walking. www.doglinks.co.nz/travel/travel.htm
My biggest worry is leaving the dog at airports in between flights. A friend of mine went to NZ via Singapore and wanted to see his dog in Singapore because there was 12 hours to wait until the next flight. Thankfully, when he called the airline, they said that he was allowed to see his dog.
My advice is when you pick an airline make sure that you can see your dogs in between flights... freakish for a dog. -

Re: Moving pets
Tue, November 7, 2006 - 11:06 AMFortunately, Air NZ flies direct to Aukland from San Francisco.
I will be very worried for those 12 hours. I was reading about how many pets die in flight. I mean, I guess 2% isn't so bad I guess, but it still worries me. -

Re: Moving pets
Fri, November 17, 2006 - 2:44 AMWe chose to place our cats in new homes, which was hard. It wasn't worth the risk to us when there were loving alternatives. At that time the quarantine was even longer, 6 months if I recall. That was just too long.
I think the MAF website has information on what's needed these days. And I'm fairly sure they have to be microchipped, they wouldn't have changed that.
