Air New Zealand Sucks!

I'm writing this from the domestic terminal in Wellington. I got here 3 hours early for my peak hour flight hoping to get on an earlier one. First of all they said no problem, then they said if I wanted to catch an earlier flight it would cost me another fare of $239! Of course the peak flight I was scheduled for will be full and they could have sold that seat easy and put me in a half empty flight, but no that's against policy.

Just this year I have flown domestically half a dozen times and I have been to the US and back as well, all with Air New Zealand. Virgin has just arrived in New Zealand and Air New Zealand is going to be appealing to me for my continued loyalty, well guess what, I'm going to go out of my way when I have a choice, to fly with anyone other than Air New Zealand in future. Instead of being able to sell an extra ticket, they will lose nout on thousands of dollars from me.

That was a good move on their part wasn't it? Of course I am also going to tell anyone who will listen about how shabbily they treat their frequent flyers. Do you think another airline would like my business?

I think all airlines would be the same. I've not had much luck trying to get free earlier flights in the recent past.

There used to be a model where airlines sold full fare tickets to business passengers which allowed you to change flights and even airlines without penalty. Apart from the admin costs, this lead to lots of seats being unused, overbooking to compensate, etc.

Now they try and get people to fly on the flight they booked. Even full fare domestic tickets usually cost money to change. So there won't be a lot of people turning up to take seats on a peak hour flight (and this time of year even the peak flights will have a few empty seats, especially on a Wednesday).
